What to do About the School Counselor Hiring Freeze

Is there a school counselor hiring freeze? How do I navigate that?

The hiring freeze is a tricky thing to navigate, since it’s on and off and sometimes depends on the budget allocation of particular schools. Luckily, there are some things you can do to position yourself for success.

  1. Earn your Master’s in School Counseling.
  2. Keep checking the DOE website, for job announcements and news on the hiring freeze.
  3. Network at events to meet Principals and veteran Counselors who can alert you to job openings and help you navigate the process.

At CITE, we not only have the largest Counseling Master’s Program in the state, with an alumni network of successful counselors who can offer advice, but we also facilitate the largest School Building Leader Certification program in the city — nearly 25% of NYC principals are graduates of our program. If you’re looking for guidance from veteran counselors who can share practical knowledge with you, and networking events with current school principals, CITE alumni events can help put you in the right place, with the right people. The rest is up to you!
