Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is honored today as an influential leader. Here we look at 3 facts about MLK and education.

 mlk and education

King argued that education had a moral and practical purpose in an article in the Morehouse College newspaper, the Maroon Tiger. He believed that, “character and moral development are necessary to give the critical intellect humane purposes,” saying, “The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. But education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.”

He criticized how the country funds its school system (a fight that echoes loudly today). He said that schools in general were not funded or valued well, and that poor schools fared even worse.  “…The richest nation on Earth has never allocated enough resources to build sufficient schools, to compensate adequately its teachers, and to surround them with the prestige our work justifies. We squander funds on highways, on the frenetic pursuit of recreation, on the overabundance of overkill armament, but we pauperize education.”

“At no time has a total, coordinated and fully adequate program been conceived. As a consequence, fragmentary and spasmodic reforms have failed to reach down to the profoundest needs of the poor.”
